AtoZChallenge 2015: P is for Philanthropy

So if you have been reading our posts you may have seen us mention Penny Dreadfuls 21 – our imprint where we created commissioned short stories until we chose to shut it down.
Well, when we launched Penny Dreadfuls 21 we wanted to do something to gets lots of people interested and, also to help others. This is where philanthropy came in. Instead of charging people for custom short stories and pocketing the money, we asked them to donate to charity and send us a receipt. When the exclusivity period was up the books were then published as free titles everywhere we could do that.
This is how Chip Off the Old Block? came about. I wrote it as a charitable commissions. It’s about 7.5K words long and I was asked for a funny paranormal story with a male/male pairing, so I came up Owen – the Antichrist, who really isn’t suited to his role just yet. He gets on with his dad (yes the one with horns) okay, but his best friend is the son of the school chaplain, so he’s not totally with the program.
I very much hope the story had made people smile over the time it has been published.

I wanted to donate a portion of the proceeds of one of my books to the Bowery Mission in Manhattan, since some of the scenes in Parts I and II take place there, and I really admire all the outreach work they’ve done since the 19th century. Unfortunately, I’ve only sold a few copies of that book since its release last June, so there’s no point in doing that. Maybe someday I’ll break even, after I make back the costs of having my hand-drawn cover scanned into digital format, the costs of the art supplies I used, and the $200 I paid to quote two George Harrison songs.
I wish you luck in the book selling department 🙂 It’s always nice to be able to give back, but covering costs is also important.
