AtoZChallenge 2015: H is for Hop

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press HAtoZChallenge 2015: H is for Hop

Welcome to day 8 of the AtoZChallenge 2015. Today Natasha Duncan-Drake is talking about hops – specifically blog hops.

My short story The Trade was originally written for The Vampire Bite Blog Hop back in 2013. I wanted to give my readers a story to download and read at their leisure and hence The Trade was born. It was available for a week during the blog hop and then I took it down, re-edited it, formatted it for online sale and uploaded it to the major book sites.Vampire Bite Blog Hop

Simply put The Trade is the story of a vampire meeting up with a sex demon to trade one need for another, set on a dystopian Earth where the gateways between reality and the demon realm have been opened. It is short and sweet and very much adult rated and designed for a quiet read over a coffee.

I believe blog hops are a fantastic adventure. You can probably tell or I wouldn’t have three blogs in this one. They are an amazing opportunity to meet new people, network with other bloggers, and simply have fun. When dealing with hops as big as the AtoZ shorter posts are better, but with smaller hops, sometimes we bloggers can be a bit more indulgent.

I like to add in things that last longer than just the day and visitors can take away with them when possible, hence free fiction. Scroll down for today’s FREE book code.

Do you like free fiction during blog hops? What keeps you coming back to a blog?

Earth no longer belongs exclusively to humans. Ever since the hoard came demons roam the wreckage of old Earth just as humans do. Karon spans the divide, both human and demon, and, yet, neither at the same time. At the mercy of his vampire heritage he seeks a trade with a powerful demon prince and can only hope that his price will be accepted.

AtoZChallenge 2015: E is for Erotica (discussion – no explicit material in post)

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press EAtoZChallenge 2015: E is for Erotica

So, we’re on day 5 already! Our theme this year is ‘why‚Äô, specifically, why have we, as authors, written the titles we have. And, each day, the book we‚Äôre talking about will be FREE.

It’s my turn again today, and the book I’m talking about today is An Amusement: The Vampire’s Concubine #1.

I write lots of different genres, and, given my background in slash fanfiction, male/male erotica¬†is a genre I enjoy and have written for a long time. I also have a teensie weensie obsession with vampires (not quite as big as my sister’s, but still pretty prevalent). The Vampire’s Concubine is therefore not the first time I’ve combined erotica and my penchant for the toothy ones, but it is the first time that I decided to break a story into multiple short episodes, each of which has to have it’s own story within the story.

I was interested in the challenge of writing an episodic serial and I picked erotica since that is my most familiar genre – an area where I know the tricks of the trade as it were. So, I developed the outline of the story and designed the episodes. There are two available at the moment, An Amusement and Rage, An Amusement being the first part, in which I worked to introduce the characters and the mystery of Umi that will arc through all the episodes.

An Amusement is all-out erotica, the sexual element driving the plot. I created the story like this, because, in an erotica serial, chances are, readers will be looking for that spicy edge (and it’s fun to write too ;P). However, it’s not all about sex. I can’t write what is known in fanfic as PWPs, plot-what-plots, which are purely about sexual encounters. I need back story, motivation for my characters, and, most importantly, relationship material. This is starting slowly in An Amusement, because the characters don’t know each other, so it is pretty physical, but there is a mystery there, something that I want to use to draw my readers through the books – who is Umi and why has he made this bargain?

So, erotica, is it a genre you enjoy, or do you prefer fade to black?

Hieron, vampire lord of Harkham, is unaccustomed to visitors in his private bedchamber unless he has expressly invited them. Such an unsolicited intrusion should mean the interloper’s death, but Hieron finds himself unusually fascinated by the stranger who appears before him unbidden. Offering no name and no explanation of his reasons, the young man offers ninety nine years of absolute service in exchange for the gift of vampire power.

Amused and aroused, Hieron agrees to the bargain, names his enigma, Umi and decides he will become his newest concubine. The only thing left is to seal the deal in a bond of sex and supernatural power.

An Amusement is episode one of a male/male erotic romance, short story serial, The Vampire’s Concubine, which is distributed as part of Fantasy Boys XXX.

AtoZChallenge 2015: D is for Dragon

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press DAtoZChallenge 2015: D is for Dragon

Greetings to day 4¬†of our blog posts for A to Z.¬†So, our theme here at Wittegen Press this year is ‚Äėwhy‚Äô, specifically, why have we, as authors, written the titles we have. And, each day, the book we‚Äôre talking about will be FREE.

Who doesn’t love baby dragons? And that is the number one reason for Bonds of Fire, the book you can find for FREE below. I love dragons, big ones, scary ones, talking ones and wild ones, and little baby ones are just irresistible. And yes, I did have the heart-melting image of a muscled, strong man holding a tiny baby in his arms when I started writing this story, only, in my head, that baby was not a human child, but a vulnerable, newly hatched dragon.

From there this story more or less wrote itself. Drekken, my Dragon Warrior, hard-edged from years in the army, solidified as a character pretty quickly and little D, the Grey Wing baby he has to protect followed on soon after that. And where there’s one baby dragon, there have to be more, right?

So there was my main plot, young dragons trapped behind enemy lines needing help to reach safety. But my muse was nagging at me and I wanted more in the story. Enter Malachi and Yakov, empaths who are the babies’ nurses. That’s when I knew I had my whole plot, and the relationship that develops between the young men and the seasoned fighter wove itself right into their escape over the mountains away from the dangers of the war.

I enjoyed developing the relationship between Drekken and D; I took time crafting my ideas about how dragon hatchlings interact with their parents and what that would mean to Drekken, who already shares a bond with his dragon, Miri. Yakov and Malachi, too, were interesting characters to build, and my ideas about them formed as I began writing.

In fact, my ideas about the whole story grew as I wrote, and, indeed, are still growing. I’ve had some readers asking for more, and my brain seems to agree with them. This story is a novella, but I feel it has more to offer in novel format, so I am currently reworking it and adding a much longer plot, for which this story make the first act.

Anyway, enough of my musings about dragons – what do you love (or hate if you are so inclined) about dragons?

Waking Light¬†(A ‘Hidden War’ Drabble)

by Sophie Duncan

Damon got up and plodded sleepily over to his door. He flicked the light switch – nothing. Groaning, he turned and began feeling his way round his room for an alternative light-source. Half asleep still, he didn’t realise he was reaching out with more than fingers when, with a fizzing sound, a candle on the safe-house room‚Äôs mantle flickered into life.

Power tingled through him. Fascinated by it, Damon wandered over, examining the wick. However, his door slammed open. Zac’s worried voice demanded, ‚ÄúDamon?‚ÄĚ

Despite his boyfriend’s worry, the strange, but comfortable feeling held sway. Damon turned, shrugged and smiled.

Together (A Charlie Waterman Drabble)

by Natasha Duncan-Drake

For Charlie, the greatest comfort he had as a Questor was that, no matter what the situation, all of them would unite when needed. Be it imminent danger or simply cheering up a friend, each of them was there for the others.

All seven of them had been chosen and when they were called they came.

He was beginning to think of their little group as a family, but he couldn’t help hoping that didn’t make him and Alexander the mum and dad. If it did he had a horrible suspicion he was the mother or rather the mother hen.

The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman

The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman is a set of YA style novels designed to be exciting, light reads for a crossover audience. They are filled with magic, adventure and a well developed sense of fun. Charlie is an ordinary 18 year old whose whole life is turned upside down when he is attacked by a two inch cat figurine. Magic was not in his plans, but he soon learns reality is not quite as straightforward as he thought.
