All Hallows Read 2017
Free Book
Possession is Nine Tenths of the Law

Every year at this spooky time we like to support All Hallows Read and give away a free book to our trick or treating visitors. All Hallows Read is a movement supported by the great Neil Gaiman to promote the joy of reading by giving away a scary book instead of candy.Pumpkin

Since it’s very hard to give candy through an internet connection, we think this is a win/win idea and have been supporting it since 2012.

We have a spine tingling book for you this year with two spooky stories to get your blood pumping as things go bump in the night!

Possession is Nine Tenths of the Law

Looking for Luticia by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Lucy is the host of a successful ghost hunting TV show, but their latest location is going to be a lot more haunting than she or her crew have ever dealt with before.

Lost in the Dark by Sophie Duncan

Evelyn Edness is a medium who works for the dead, helping them to move on from the limbo of an eternity as ghosts. Kate Grange has come to ask for her help.

The book is free at Smashwords today ONLY. Tomorrow is goes up to 99c, so grab it while you can.

Share a Scare - Halloween Blog Hop

Welcome to the Share a Scare Blog Hop 2015 – Sign-up Post

This hop is for bloggers, authors and artists who like a good spine tingling supernatural something and is in honour of all things Halloween. It is inspired by All Hallows Read, where the idea is to give away a scary book to encourage reading, and we thought after doing it for three years that we’d broaden the concept a bit  this time around.  Woohooooahhhhhhahhhh – yes, that was our impression of a ghost.

Everyone is welcome to join in.

Rules for participating

  1. Put one of the Blog Hop buttons (either the 150x150px or the 200x200px) somewhere on your blog – see below for the copy and paste code.
  2. Add your blog to the Share a Scare list at the bottom of this post.
  3. On the 31st October 2015 make a post with a free (slightly) scary, supernatural story/art of some kind in it.
    1. Bloggers, feel free to recommend/review a free supernatural story (example M.R.James has lots of free ghost stories on Amazon), or recount a real life ghost story, or an urban legend, or a local ghost story or something along scary lines.
    2. Authors, write a free supernatural flash fiction, or give away a book for free. Monsters, paranormal, ghosts, demons – your imagination is the limit, but we’d prefer if it was a little spookyish.
    3. Artists, give us the heebiejeebies with your art.
  4. In your post on the day make a link back to this post (http://www.wittegenpress.com/wp_main/share-a-scare-halloween-blog-hop-2015.html) or post the list of other participants using the code at the bottom of this entry.
  5. Tell ALL your friends … well okay, you don’t have to tell them all, but if you would pass the word around about the blog hop, now and on the day, that would be great.

AtoZChallenge 2015: Z is for Zachęcić (encourage)

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press ZAtoZChallenge 2015: Z is for Zachęcić (encourage)

Yes, we completely cheated with this one.  Zachęcić is Polish for ‘encourage’ (at least Google tells us it is, we hope we haven’t made a huge faux pas) and today we’re talking about books we wrote for All Hallows Read.

All Hallows Read is, as its name suggests, an event that takes place over Halloween, and it is a celebration of reading, where folks give a scary story to someone (young, or old) to encourage them to read. We heard about this event, which is supported by Neil Gaiman, three years ago and, as you’ve probably gathered by now if you’ve been joining us during the AtoZ, we’re fans of horror. Thus, we decided to create special books of short, spooky stories that we could give away FREE over Halloween.

Thus, to finish our AtoZ, we have not one, not two, but three FREE books for you, the three sets of stories we have written for All Hallows Read, six creepy stories in all.

AtoZChallenge 2015: Y is for Yuck

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press YAtoZChallenge 2015: Y is for Yuck

We are almost at the end, well done to everyone for nearly making it. Over here at Wittegen Press we are discussing the ‘why’ behind our books. Today, Natasha Duncan-Drake is going to talk about why ‘yuck’ means something to her.

So I love horror, at least supernatural horror. My favourite is a good ghost story, but I do enjoy monsters as well. That is why ‘yuck’ came to mind for my short story ‘The Crosses We Bear’. This was written for the Giveaway Games and I wanted to write something that would make my audience shy away and go ‘yuck’ or ‘ewww’.

This is the traditional story of outsiders who mess with something they do not understand and pay the consequences.

I simply let myself enjoy writing this one. The male protagonist really isn’t a very nice man so I hope the reader kind of enjoys it when he gets his comeuppance 😈 . There are actually two monsters and I hope the first makes people shudder and the second screw up their nose and murmur ‘yuck’.

Do you like horror? Are you fond of monsters? Which is your favourite horror monster? I think mine is The Thing – makes me shudder every time.

AtoZChallenge 2015: L is for Left Turn

AtoZ Challenge 2015 Wittegen Press LAtoZChallenge 2015: L is for Left Turn

It’s day 12 of the AtoZ Challenge, hope we all still have some energy left to make it to the end 🙂 . Today we are going down the spook road as Natasha Duncan-Drake talks about her book Face of the Dead.

I really enjoyed writing Face of the Dead, mainly because it freaked out anyone who read it 😉 . I love a good ghost story and that was what I was going for. Given the looks Soph gave me after she read it I scored myself a few points.Brown Lady

Of course everyone knows the best kind of ghost story had a twist in the tale, or rather a ‘left turn’ in the road.

Face of the Dead starts out as a regular haunted house story with Miles moving in to an old farmhouse to start over after some nastiness in his past. Of course, as soon as he moves in, strange things start to happen.

Is it a real ghost? Is it the locals? Is it Miles losing his marbles?

Well, you’ll have to read to find out and I can almost guarantee you won’t see the ending coming 😉 .

What is your favourite kind of horror story? Do you like psychological horror, or spooky horror, or slasher horror best, or are you not a fan of the genre at all?

Old houses creak and groan and make noises. Miles had expected that when he bought the farmhouse, but the tapping on the windows is a bit of a shock the first night he moves in. Of course there has to be a rational explanation and Miles is determined to find it, which would be easier if things didn’t keep getting stranger. (male/male horror fiction)
